Westfjords Ice Climbing

Experience the untapped potential of ice climbing in Iceland's Westfjords with Beartooth Mountain Guides

Bildudalur, Iceland

Take your ice climbing adventures to the next level with a trip to Bildudalur, a small town in the Westfjords of Iceland. With our experienced guides, you'll have the chance to explore some of the world's most unique ice climbing right above the ocean.

Trip Outline

On this unique trip to the Westfjords of Iceland, you can expect world class ice climbing, relaxing hot springs, and wild landscapes. This experience was designed for the experienced ice climber in need of an adventure. It is perfect for those who have experience ice climbing at multiple venues in the US or Canada and looking to branch out into new locations.

Although custom options are available, our standard trip takes place over 7 days in Iceland. With only one stop in Reykjavík on your way to and from the region, travel is safe and easy. Layovers in the culturally interesting capital city are highly recommended.

We begin by picking you up in Bildudalur, directly from the small seaside airport, and heading straight to our accommodations. Situated up at the head of a fjord, the small fishing town of Bildudalur hosts only locals during the winter months. The hotel offers bunk rooms or private rooms (at an additional cost) within eyesight of nearby ice climbs. Every breakfast and dinner, made fresh with local ingredients, will be provided at the accommodations. Local beer and wine are all available to compliment meals. Lunch will not be provided, although the small market next door will cover most last minute needs. Post-climbing outdoor hot springs depend on road conditions, but are typically no more than a 15 minute drive.

Depending on your climbing background and desire, we tailor the upcoming days to provide the best experience. From 300 meter WI5+ routes to WI3 moderates, the Westfjords have it all. The opportunity for first ascents add another level of fun to the adventure, for those who are up to the challenge. Expect steep but short approaches, long days of climbing, and relaxing evenings. Despite having somewhat moderate temperatures, the moist and cool ocean breeze can be quite cold!

A typical itinerary includes 4 days of climbing, with one rest day in the middle of the week and two travel days. Weather can be fierce in Iceland, however, and the schedule is subject to change to maximize climbing opportunities.

For an additional cost, a ski touring trip on the Troll Peninsula  can be arranged. Only a few hours away, this epicenter for skiing is another reason to visit Iceland on it's own! Inquire at the office for details.
