Rock Climbing:

Basic and intermediate rock craft begins with these 1 day outings at easily accessible crags in the Red Lodge area that are designed to be instructive, progressive and physically challenging. Beartooth Mountain Guides will provide helmets, climbing shoes, harnesses, ropes and the requisite hardware - making this an excellent way to become acquainted with rock climbing skills and techniques. 

Rock Climbing Courses

Rock 1: Basic Rock Craft

Organized as an introduction to rock climbing, this course teaches systems fundamental to all climbing activities. The curriculum includes:

  • Leave No Trace Ethics
  • Hazard/Risk Assessment
  • Use and care of equipment
  • Knots/Hitches
  • Movement on rock
  • Anchors/Belays
  • Management systems for top roping

Client/Guide ratio: 6:1
Dates: Daily, April through September (weather permitting)

Rock 1:                       FULL Day - HALF Day

Rock 2: Intermediate Rock Craft

This course builds upon the skills presented in the Rock 1 Basic course. Clients receive instruction regarding the types and placement of gear and “seconding”. The curriculum includes:

  • Leave No Trace Ethics
  • Hazard/Risk Assessment
  • Use and care of equipment
  • Bolts, hexes, camalots, SLCD’s
  • Gear placement
  • Anchor standards/construction
  • Rappelling
 
Client/Guide ratio: 2:1
Prerequisites: Rock 1 or equivalent. Clients should be able to climb in the 5.6 range.
Dates: April through September (weather permitting)
Pricing:
Private - $250/person/day
Group of 2 - $150/person/day
3 or more - $125/person/day

Advanced Multi-Pitch Craft

Our guides lead trips on several Beartooth ‘classic’ rock climbs that provide excellent introduction to technical climbing skills on multi-pitch settings. Clients are required to have prerequisite experience offered in Rock 2 or equivalent and must be comfortable climbing in the 5.7+ range.

  • The Ramp: East Rosebud Canyon, 5 pitches
  • Bald Bulge: West Rosebud Canyon, 4 pitches
  • Westminster Spire: Main Fork Rock Creek, 6 pitches

Client/Guide ratio: 1:1
Prerequisites: Rock 2 or equivalent. Clients should be able to climb in the 5.7+ range.
